Wetland wastewater treatment is a nature-based system that uses water, aquatic plants, and microorganisms to remove contaminants from water. At PowerCem we have developed a Nano Catalyst based on Zeolites and Alkili earth metals. This inert binder additive allows Water Utilities and Contractors to design and construct all the site infrastructure, including the water basins from all types of in-situ soils, without importing stone, plastics, or clays.
This innovative process has been used for the first time at the large South Elmsall wetlands for Yorkshire Water and has saved thousands of truckloads of materials to and from the site.
Working with Eric Wright Water and our design partners Rodgers Leask the groundwork carried out by DNS (Midlands) has taken place over the winter months, saving cost, time, and carbon sustainably.
Constructed wetland water basins can be used to treat waste from sludge dewatering when constructed alongside sewage treatment facilities, landfill leachate, mine drainage, stormwater catchment, and agricultural activities.
Constructed wetlands provide a sustainable way to treat polluted water with minimal operation and reduced cost.
The impermeable layer, which forms the water basins, is usually made of clay that prevents the filtration of waste down into the lower aquifers. Unfortunately, the correct type of clay is seldom available in sufficient quantity where the wetland and/or storm basins are needed.
With our innovative RoadCem methodology the placement can be almost anywhere and with little material being moved on and off site, transport planning and local disruption is kept to a minimum.
With the South Elmsall project lorry movements were reduced by over 3,000 trucks and a new 650m access road and two bridges were no longer needed.
No sand, stone or other natural resources were needed and more importantly, no plastic liners were required.
With this strong, impermeable, durable technology, the maintenance of the basins will be safe and simple and at end of life all the RoadCem bound soils will be100% recyclable.
Construction with RoadCem involves excavation and grading, of the land to achieve the desired hydraulic flow patterns. Followed by excavation and forming of the water basins.
This should make constructing of a wetland a cost-effective and technically feasible approach for treating wastewater and controlling/containing storm water that is not only saves cost and time to construct but also has low operational and maintenance costs.
When compared to other wastewater treatment methods, it is aesthetically pleasing and eliminates the odours associated with traditional wastewater treatment
RoadCem is being used extensively by Mott McDonald Bentley for the current construction of the Dearne Reach constructed wetlands for their client Yorkshire Water.
With over 10 years of experience in the UK, we have the knowledge and expertise to handle any ground engineering challenge.
